Sunnyhill Inc. was founded in 1978 by a group of parents whose children were diagnosed with a developmental disabilities. These 18 families shared concern for the well-being of their children as they approached adulthood and sought a place where their children could have productive lives. Over the years, Sunnyhill has evolved, now providing customized daily, in-home residential support services for close to 400 children and adults as well as at their Residential Care Facility and Assisted Living Facility, both located in Jefferson County.  Through the residential programs, Sunnyhill maximizes independence in the least restrictive environment. Like all of Sunnyhill's programs, Sunnyhill's residential services emphasize health, safety, independence, personal choice, autonomy and involvement in the community. Currently the organization provides care through Missouri's Medicaid Waiver Program for people who need 24 hour support and through the Independent Supported Living Arrangements (ISLA) Program for those individuals who can live independently with occasional support.
Through the Behavior Analysis Program, Sunnyhill works with children and adults on practical daily living skills to ensure overall success and positive behavior reinforcement. 
In addition to providing residential and behavioral support, Sunnyhill also offers educational opportunities through Sunnyhill University, a school that gives adults with disabilities the opportunity to venture out of their homes, learn about their community and the world around them, improve on valuable life skills, socialize and enjoy life. Sunnyhill University creates a learning environment for adults with disabilities that fosters interest, creativity, learning, independence, autonomy, confidence, pride and dignity. By integrating life skills education with academics, Sunnyhill University provides people with developmental disabilities the opportunity to develop their intellectual, physical and social skills.
Over 600 children and adults of all abilities enjoy recreation at Sunnyhill Adventures Camp every summer with hundreds more visiting the camp throughout the year on field trips and private events. Located on 65-scenic acres in Dittmer, Sunnyhill Adventures offers individuals the opportunity to experience high-adventure on the 50 ft. Alpine Tower, climbing wall or zip line across the 2-acre lake as well as fish, paddleboat, archery and more, accessible for everyone.  
Many individuals served by Sunnyhill, as well as other community organizations, participate in Sunnyhill's On The Road Adventures program. Once or twice a month, Sunnyhill escorts travelers on weekend road trips to desirable vacation locations such as Nashville, Memphis, Branson, Chicago and Indianapolis. Travelers enjoy many activities such as sightseeing, shopping, attractions and shows, all with the support of Sunnyhill staff.
